Tour Overview
Grgur Island is a serene and captivating destination steeped in history and natural beauty. This uninhabited island boasts rugged cliffs, pristine beaches, and lush vegetation, making it a haven for sea kayaking.
Amidst its captivating scenery, there is a cozy restaurant on the island where we can enjoy great dishes and cold drinks.
Grgur served as a political prison for females (1948-1988), where numerous individuals deemed threatening to the ruling regime were incarcerated. The island's remote location and formidable terrain made it an ideal site for a prison, with inmates enduring harsh conditions amidst the island's untamed landscape.
Today, we'll explore the remnants of the former prison complex, including crumbling stone structures and remnants of barbed wire fences, offering poignant glimpses into its tumultuous past. Despite its dark history, the island exudes an eerie beauty, with panoramic vistas of the surrounding azure waters and distant islands.
Whether you're drawn to its storied past, breathtaking landscapes, or outdoor adventures, Grgur Island offers a unique and unforgettable experience.
The provided itinerary serves as a rough outline, meticulously crafted to showcase the highlights of our sea kayak adventure along Rab and Grgur stunning coastline. However, it is important to note that our plans are flexible and may be subject to adjustments based on local weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances. This flexibility ensures that we can adapt to changes in wind, waves, and other environmental factors, prioritizing the safety and enjoyment of our participants above all else
09:30 - Upon your arrival, we'll provide you with dry bags, essential for storing extra clothes, towels, and food during our adventure. A 20-liter dry bag will accommodate your essentials. Following packing, our expert guides will conduct a brief session on safety protocols to ensure a secure and enjoyable journey.
10:00 - We'll embark on our paddling adventure, exploring the western part of Lopar with its intriguing sandstone geological formations. As we glide over the turquoise sea, sometimes so calm it feels like flying, we'll encounter several sandy beaches and take a refreshing swim break before crossing over to the Island of Grgur. We aim for the bunker, strategically positioned for guards to communicate in case of alerts, with 38 bunkers encircling the island.
Continuing along the island's west coast, we'll pass by more small pebble beaches blending into the emerald sea until we reach the Bay of Grgur.
As we head towards our pebble beach, the chef at the local restaurant, situated amidst the prison ruins, will already be busy preparing our dishes. We'll have the opportunity to place our orders during our earlier swim break, considering that this spot is often bustling as the sole eatery on the island.
If the restaurant is closed, particularly on Mondays, we'll inform you during the booking process so you can prepare yourself for a picnic lunch instead.
14:00 - After a satisfying meal and a refreshing drink, we resume paddling towards the northern tip of the island. The vista opens up to the breathtaking rugged islands of Prvić and Krk, framed by the Velebit mountains to the east. As we navigate along high cliffs, gradually descending from a 200-meter peak adorned with bunkers, we'll be shielded from the sun by the afternoon shade.
Passing through a narrow passage between two rocks, we'll glide into an emerald bay before exploring the sunny part of the island. En route, we'll pass another section of the prison where female captives were once held before reaching the southernmost point, where we'll pause for a brief swim before paddling back to Lopar's sandy beaches. Our journey concludes in a tranquil, shallow lagoon before returning to Lopar Harbor.
18:00 - Depending on the group's pace, we'll wrap up our tour and transfer drivers back to their cars, allowing them to retrieve the rest of their group. While waiting, participants can join us for ice cream or coffee, reflecting on the day's memorable experiences.
